Malterie

Lille, France
2022-

The existing malt house in Lille is a valuable, historic building situated in a prominent location within the city. The building’s low ceiling heights make it ideal for use by artists and creatives. Its new function will preserve the original barrel-vaulted floors, with a revised infrastructure to better accommodate the needs of its users.

An extension made of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) will be added on top of the malt house, housing a youth hotel. The choice of CLT ensures that the current foundations are not overloaded, as it is a lightweight addition. This new extension will be clad in gold-copper colored metal, referencing the old brewing kettles once used in the malt house. The architectural design is sharp, without direct windows. Given that the original windows of the malt house are quite small, the decision was made not to reveal the scale of the new structure immediately. The window openings in the addition are recessed and feature small canopies, subtly complementing the building’s historic character.

On the side facing Victor Hugo Boulevard, the roof volume opens up through a refined angular movement. Behind the vertical slats, which continue the relief of the metal cladding, large windows provide views into the communal spaces of the youth hotel.

The inner courtyard will be made accessible and open for both residents and visitors, transforming the malt house into a lively, inviting space within the city.
